I was deeply saddened to learn of the passing away of Harilal. He wrote to me from the intensive care unit of the Asiri hospital in mid-October, telling me that this would likely be the last time he would be communicating with me. I found this hard to believe, but alas, it turned out to be true. Harilal had performed a great service during his tenure as the general secretary of the Buddhist Publication Society, helping to promote the Society’s work of disseminating the Dhamma throughout the world. He was also a diligent practitioner who rose early each morning to devote an hour to intensive meditation. May his great merits carry him to a blissful rebirth and may he draw ever closer to Nibbana, the supreme goal.
