Sita Beatrice Fernando was born on 14 February (Valentine’s Day) in Colombo, Sri Lanka. Her father B.J.Fernando was Unofficial Magistrate, Notary Public and Procter in the Supreme Court. Sita was named after her mother, a headmistress at Buddhist Girls College. Her sisters are Rohini (Teacher), Lakshmi (Attorney-at-Law), Rukmani (Attorney-at-Law) and Sreeni (Civil Servant). She studied medicine at Colombo Medical Faculty and graduated in the batch of 1964, specialising in Anesthesiology. Sita married and had two daughters Neelakshi and Indunil. She left Sri Lanka and emigrated to the UK in 1975 to continue her career as an anaesthetist. She trained as a GP in Scotland and then settled in London, as a partner in a GP practice in Battersea for the next 30 years, serving an enormous community of over 20,000 patients, before retiring. Sita always had time for anyone suffering from ill health or sickness – she wanted to help.
